The experience

The first railroad tunnel built in the United States, bored through the mountain for the Allegheny Portage Railroad and now a walk- and ride-through feature of a rail-trail along the historic railroad grade. The trail runs from a parking area on Beech Hill Road near Mineral Point, about five miles northeast of Johnstown, through the tunnel and along the Little Conemaugh River valley, with trailside markers on the portage railroad's history.
